As most of those reading ninja themed blogs should have realized by now is that most of us are noticing a sharp decline in the “shooty mission runner” type. A lot of speculation goes around the reason why too. But, sadly there is no sure fact to prove anything. The best we can do really is hope that it would simply pick up again…

Don’t let this decline in a more traditional method of extracting tears get your hopes down though. Many people have some clever ways of getting the entertainment they want out of EVE 😛  Bearing that in mind, I finally got around to getting my hands dirty with some corporation infiltration.

To be honest, it wasn’t that hard really. My method of finding a target I think was rather unique too 😛 So one day I’m bored as heck and decide to start scanning for a wormhole. The initial idea was to find some dude making a mistake, maybe not checking DSCAN and then getting relieved of whatever he is piloting as punishment 🙂

Turns out that the first wormhole I scan out is a Class 1… with 2 caps on dscan… Immediately I knew that these guys are here to stay 😀  Quickly I probe down all the sites in the hole and start the waiting game. Both the Thanatos and Chimera were just floating in the POS. It was not long though after I have finished probing the hole that some activity started to stir. They piloted the 2 caps and a Ferox and warped from the one anomaly to the other. I am in a cloaky Loki at the moment and after seeing the amount of drones they had there (refer to the pic) I decided I will wait it out and see what happens. Maybe I could just pop the salvager at the end and claim some easy profits 😛

But no, they guarded the Noctis that came to cleanup pretty well haha. During this time it struck me, I need to get into this corporation and kill these caps. Yes! That is what I must do. “/emote evil laugh muhaha”

I got an alt ready and made initial contact. Spun them some story about me being lonely miner needing friends and what not. They took a while to get me into the corporation but alas I got in. I was not asked for any API. Not once did I talk about the wormhole during recruitment though. Before I left the class 1 hole I got myself another alt inside the wormhole as a way to scan myself out. So this way I could get in and out without legitimately them even knowing that I know about the wormhole. I might have to add here that this is a highsec mining corporation and they are very hush-hush about the wormhole.

I have been in the corporation for 2 weeks, and after watching their activity times I took a change to go and peek in the wormhole to see what there is for me 🙂 They have logged out toons in the Capitals now so that is not my target. But an easy raid sounds good to me? I took my scanning-alt and scanned the new highsec, moved my main toon into the hole and watched. Once the hole was clear, I contracted over the bookmarks and made my first entrance into the wormhole:

Excuse the blanking out of the names, but so  many of them were not even renamed it shocking. Also, this screenie was actually taken during the heist and is missing some of the ships that we have already taken out. So anyways. I return home and decide that I will hit the coming weekend once they all have logged off. I also quickly browsed around the hangars and saw there are some nice items that I could grab there too! A quick estimate was say roughly 2/3 Bil worth of stuff. Not exactly a gold mine, but also not bad for my first time.

The week went by where I was not very active anyways when finally the Friday came! The planned time for this was like 12am local time. From the activity that I have seen, this is the time most of them have logged off. Essentially, the only guys I really want out-of-the-way are the ones that live in the wormhole. I had a few of the WCS guys ready too to help me out.

The plan was simple. Once they all logged out, I will enter the wormhole (which I scanned out earlier that day and got ready), warp to the POS and launch and bump the ships out of the shield. Then I will have someone in a POD that can fly the hull warp to me, board the ship and dock it up in empire. Easy. But there were a few complications. Firstly, the toon I am using is terrible in flying anything competent, so 90% of the ships had to be launched and bumped. What did I have to use for this? A MWD Fitted Omen :((( This had a major time factor to it. Secondly, the POS is hostile, so anything with a really long align time (or a pilot making  a mistake) could cost us getting blown up. Not that this really matters as it’s not our ships, but it would connect our names to this.

When the time finally came I proceeded as planned and launched the first Tengu. Once it was bumped out I flew to my alt, boarded the ship and warped to the best aligned celestial. Moments later a corpmate logs in!!! I did not have him on my watch list so I only realized this when I had already warped off with the tengu and was  MWD-ing back to the SMA. In vain I warp the Omen out and wait for the suspicion to rise in corp.

Like 5 minutes pass without a word being said in corp, and the corp mate logs off… Ok? I guess he didn’t notice? I hope. Everyone returned to their positions and we resumed. I bumped the 2nd tengu out and it gets transported safely. Upon launching the Broadsword, another corpmate logs in. This time I have him on my contacts list and noticed it immediately. I let go of everything and warp out as soon as possible. I was watching the POS with my main in the loki and saw that I had successfully warped off the Omen before he landed in the POS. PHEW.

Immediately he asks if the owner of the Broadsword had logged in. I play a little afk game and when I came “back”, claimed to know nothing.

He logged shortly after that. I waited a good 20minutes just to make sure he doesn’t try to Ninja log in to try to catch me red handed. That didn’t happen.

From here it was pretty smooth sailing along the way. All the ships and items I wanted made it out of the wormhole, except what I thought was retreivers was in fact a mixture between covetors and retreivers. These ships mass’ was too much for the wormhole, so we decided to self destruct all of them 😀 Because I was able to fly them all out to a safe to get blown up this went rather fast.

The fireworks ended our evening and as we were all tired we called it a night. I moved the infiltration alt way back to the corporations home to try to minimize the suspicion.

The next day it was time to count up the totals. The heist netted me the following:

  • 4 Fitted Drake
    • One drake was T2 Ancillary Rigged with Dread Guiristas CPU mods and T2 Gang Assist modules
  • 7 Fitted Ferox
  • 5 Fitted Naga
  • 4 Fitted Buzzard
  • 2 Fitted Helios
    • 1 Sisters Expanded Probe Launcher
  • 2 Fitted Viator
  • 2 Iteron Mark III
  • 1 Manticore
  • 1 Broadsword
    • 2 x B-type Active Resist modules totaling about 150million
  • 2 Tengus
    • 1 T2 Resist rigged.
  • Random loot and salvage

All the ships were stripped and hauled to Jita to sell. In total the profits from the heist netted 4 Billion ISK.

Now, here comes the really strange and funny part… This happened a week ago. I am still in this corporation. No mails have been sent out regarding a ‘thief’. No tears. Nothing 😦 I have liberated 4 Billion ISK, and that did not get me ONE tear. Not even one. In fact, when I log in, I am invited to join the guys in missions etc. HUH.

The one player that actually lives in this wormhole has logged in multiple times, and never has he said anything remotely regarding the missing ships/mods. He didn’t even ask about the Broadsword…

Maybe I’ll come back for round two sooner that I thought.

February seems to have been the month where the guardians of ninja land decided that were allowed some pretty pimp kills. In no way should that statement be seen as a complaint, but a mere ‘Thank You’ to the loot angels 😉

Now when it comes to the art of ninjaing, a lot seems to be taken for granted. Especially if your constantly at it. A lot of repetition is involved believe it or not. Scan -> Bait -> (Get ignored by the mission runner) -> Drop off loot -> Scan … . Get the picture? Eventually you get picky about your targets too, but the worst that can happen is you tend to lose that “thinking out of the box” edge that most ninjas have.  Often than not this results in boredom too. Sadly, that is where the patience part plays a very big role.

It was this very boredom that was starting to creep up  my sleeve when I decided to move systems. That’s how I found myself in Narai. I quickly setup for a safe spot, organized my fleet and started the ninja ritual again. My fist scan was a hit on a Paladin. I warped in as usual and added the toon’s corporation as a contact.

“dezap VI” was the Paladin pilot. It was an Angels Extravaganza mission and if this parteh was going to happen, it would be here in the 2nd room. Dscan did not reveal what “alogoskoufhs” was piloting either. With the 2 stations in local I assumed he was either docked, cloaked or off dscan range.

I proceeded to loot the first item, which resulted in the Paladin stopping to fire at any more NPC. Moments later a local chat came up: “gtfo”. Hah, that’s a good sign! Obviously ignoring his friendly request I continue looting, making sure I stay within 40km which is my maximum point range. Again, another chat in local appears: “qu1ckkkk gtfo man”.

Shortly after that last message the Paladin aligned to one of the stations. Immediately I knew what is coming. He is hoping to alpha me, taking a potshot. “If this fails, well I’ll just dock up and log. Max point is roughly 24km anyways, right?” I made damn sure I was ready to get traversal and apply a heated point to this sexxeh Marauder.

Like a film playing out in front of me he shoots! I Immediately notice the damage notification also saying something about “Imperial Navy (blah blah) almost killz you“. I survived the alpha and judging from that message we might have some nice bling here 🙂

I did not hesitate to get my RR on grid as soon as possible either as I am still unsure as to what his friend in local is in. I started a convo with dezap VI as well in the meantime to prevent him from just logging off. From my past experiences this stupid logoffski thing is still a problem in Empire.

By the time I had my orca on grid, alogoskoufhs made his first appearance… in a viator? o_0

The obvious response to this play of cards is “Huh?”, though the plan became apparent as the paladin logged off. He was hoping He’d get away if he logs off… but wanted to make sure with the cloaky alt in grid. Too bad he couldn’t cloak before I had him locked haha.

Finally not thinking much of his friend in local anymore, I proceed to swap to the Sliepner and started with the pounding. The convo with him had no tears but I managed to get 200 odd mil out of him. Lame, apart from the drop 😉

http://twcs.eve-kill.net/?a=kill_detail&kll_id=12376288

That was the only kill we managed to get out of that system. So, before boredom killz us, we moved again. On teamspeak we agreed to move down to Minmatar space as that is one of the few hunting grounds we haven’t really tried.

The evening was so dam slow, with hardly any bites or signs of upset missions runners. A few hours later the fleet decided to move on. I, however remained as I was still pestering a Golem.

A while after landing in his mission and stealing, I was reported in local. Also, note the time “17:48:54“:

Ha ok. Well that kinda explains how much he knows about aggression mechanics. 😛 This opened the door for my neutral alt to convo him and find out more about this pirate scum.

[ 2012.02.10 17:55:43 ] [alt] > what are you in?
[ 2012.02.10 17:56:30 ] Danegrus > A T2 golem

To help understand what hes saying, later I realized that by “reals” be means pvp. While my alt had him in convo, I was sitting on the gate with my bait merlin. I figured hes using Google Translate as he took exceptionally long to respond in the convo. Eventually I was no longer red to him, but there are no wrecks to loot either as were still at the first gate.

I tried my best to convince him that I will come and help him kill this pirate. As a reward I will share the pirates bounty with him. Long shot lol. But he remained on the fact that he doesn’t do ‘reals’ (pvp).

It’s always very interesting to learn and understand the psychology of your prey. By better understanding them, you know exactly how to react to any situation. At least, theoretically. That was until Dangerus said:

[ 2012.02.10 18:05:45 ] Danegrus > you got the same amount of bounty as he does youy guys together?

My alt and myself had a bounty difference of 5k isk at the time. I’ve tried to be as ant pirate as possible on my alt, but that blew me as it was the last thing I expected. After that he kindly apologized for not wanting anything to do with this. He closed the convo and jumped to resume his mission.

I figured this will be a no go from here now as he is obviously not interested. We were discussing the situation on voice comms, when the idea came that another corpies alt comes in some actual pew pew and act like they are attacking my bait merlin. I warped out, dropped a can with bookmarks and we got the aggression going. The plan was for me to return, loot and salvage when suddenly the drake lands on me and starts attacking me. Obviously I’d warp off scared and start a convo again on my alt asking if my friend helped kill him.

I returned to the mission and was greeted by a convo invite from Danegrus:

[ 2012.02.10 18:18:37 ] Danegrus > Why you messin with me on a mission that just has rock to get?
[ 2012.02.10 18:19:33 ] qu1ckkkk > english bad

[ 2012.02.10 18:22:43 ] Danegrus > ya this is high sec but I'm a mission runner
[ 2012.02.10 18:23:25 ] qu1ckkkk > i clean
[ 2012.02.10 18:23:31 ] qu1ckkkk > friend?
[ 2012.02.10 18:24:41 ] Danegrus > Kinda hard being friends when the first time I see ya you tun yourself
red to me like you wanna fight

At the same time, call it luck if you want, a random probe landed in the mission too. I did not plan for this at all, but obviously it was another ninja that found the Golem. This was the golden opportunity for the drake to land.

We role played as planned and a while after I warped the merlin out, my alt convoed Danegrus again:

[ 2012.02.10 18:26:16 ] [alt] > did my friend find him?
[ 2012.02.10 18:26:49 ] [alt] > the drake?
[ 2012.02.10 18:27:26 ] Danegrus > ya he came back and wanted to be friends but your

[ 2012.02.10 18:27:33 ] [alt] > \o/
[ 2012.02.10 18:28:44 ] Danegrus > Got autum afinity in a probe sittin here now thanx for the help

I couldn’t have asked for this to work out any better! I returned immediately hoping to get some action now:

[ 2012.02.10 18:29:14 ] Danegrus > He just flew back in.
[ 2012.02.10 18:29:23 ] [alt] > really? :(

[ 2012.02.10 18:33:14 ] Danegrus > I know that usin my ammo to pay for his loot too.
[ 2012.02.10 18:34:46 ] Danegrus > Na I told you I don't want the hassel specially for this mission
and I dont want a war dec and what that involved
[ 2012.02.10 18:39:01 ] Danegrus > He doesn't understand english very well either

Ok, lol at that last part. At least now I know my fake ‘fail English’ attempt wasn’t in vain 😀 From here it was a LONG LONG convo with countless attempts from my side to get him to shoot. Boy oh boy. I even at one stage asked: “Please just shoot him.”. Yeah pretty damn desperate I know. At some stage I though I finally broke him when we cane here:

[ 2012.02.10 19:08:12 ] Danegrus > 5 years havn't shot at a real
[ 2012.02.10 19:08:28 ] [alt] > he will die! trust me!
[ 2012.02.10 19:08:52 ] Danegrus > you can't shoot at him can ya?
[ 2012.02.10 19:09:25 ] [alt] > no :( need you to shoot at him cause im helping you i will have agresison too AND the drake
[ 2012.02.10 19:11:44 ] Danegrus > shit I don't wanna

Sadly that wasn’t the case. Looking at the time there, I was pretty damn tired by now. But, the only thing that kept me going was the fact that he has allowed me to bug him for so long. 99% of people would have brushed me off by now.

Finally, he yellow boxes me. At least by now it felt like we’ve made some progression and hopes were getting high. Due to us conversing in fleet chat now there was silence on voice comms. At some stage someone mentioned “This suspense is killing me”. Haha.

What felt like a lifetime of begging on my alt, Danegrus finally pulls that trigger to fling some angry, possibly confused missiles my way. I’ve been bothering this guy for so dam long it felt unreal that he actually shot 😀

Suddenly I lose my terrible English problem and start a convo to proceed with the ransom:

[ 2012.02.10 19:45:06 ] qu1ckkkk > hello
[ 2012.02.10 19:45:20 ] Danegrus > ya hello

[ 2012.02.10 19:46:40 ] qu1ckkkk > 800mil?
[ 2012.02.10 19:47:00 ] Danegrus > 500?

[ 2012.02.10 19:53:07 ] qu1ckkkk > bai bai

At roughly 19:53:07, little over 2 hours later, Danegrus’s Golem was finally declared dead!

http://twcs.eve-kill.net/?a=kill_detail&kll_id=12404112

I actually feel tired again…

One thing we love here in WCS. is when a gank escalates. The more people join the parteh, the more fun we have. One such escalation was when AcidF scanned down a site with a legion, 2 typhoons and a few odd cruisers. When we learnt that they all were in the same corporation we all quickly hopped into logi and waited for the famous “Aggro” shout 😀

It took nowhere near the time it took me on the Golem for ALL of the mission runners to aggress AcidF’s bait merlin. Luckily it was not a gated mission and we were able to land the full logistics fleet right on him. He obviously decided to point the Legion.

So, now we have 5 odd guys red to AcidF, a pointed legion and 3 logistics on grid. In a surprise move, the Legion opened fired on Darthwix’ Scimitar. His scimatar has a point fitted, so that means a second aggressor is going to die. \o / Moments later I get shot at as well by a Typhoon. I dont have a point fitted logi and decide to warp out and return in gank. That would mean 3 dead mission runners 🙂

I return in the sleipner and land right on top of the Typhoon that aggressed me. Boy did he melt fast o_0 Darthwix was still holding onto the Legion while we try and keep the bait Merlin alive with AcidF burning for his gank. A few of the smaller ships warped off now but we were hoping they bring more!

Things were getting a little complicated now though. The Legion was burning at 500+ms  towards a station with a scimitar holding on to him doing easily more than that thanks to the fleet boosts. This caused them to move way out of range, so I had to go get my logi again to keep acid and the bait alive while my alt and his logi concentrates on keeping Darthwix alive as that Legion would kill him without reps.

Thanks to the orca nerf, AcidF had to launch and board his gank as the Merlin was still aggressed. This left the merlin is space as he somehow managed to forget to scoop it or something. Sadly they got that kill. He killed a coercer and Typhoon and started to burn towards the pointed legion that was well close to 1000km away from where this all started. One minor complication here was that the time it would take his loki vs the aggression time that he has left on the Legion to get to him might be too little. He did however just just, and I mean just manage to fire off a shot to extend the timer.

Now, we have 3 logis and a loki on our side and a pointed legion on theirs. What was interesting to see was the amount of non aggressed corpies that would land in the mission and try to burn towards the Legion. Corporation aggro was long gone for all of us.

We were enjoying the sight of none of them being MWD fitted to even try suicide jam us or something, yet the legion kept burning away XD Anyways. The loki and the scimitars drones combined were unable to break this Legion. The cap management was insane from his part I must say and he managed to out tank the dps he was given. This called for plan B! There is always a plan B isn’t there?

I returned once again to fetch my Sleipner so that Darthwix can jump into it and I in his Scimitar. It was a slow 1500km burn @ 1500m/s odd. They tried to extract a ransom out of him in this time but he was just too full of stories.

My Sliepner finally made it in range and we did the eject + board thing in space. The legion died moments later.

In total that escalation netted us 4 killmails. 2 Typhoons, a Coercer and this Legion for the loss of 1 Merlin 🙂

Lastly, I feel I need to tell about this particular engagement just to emphasize the mysterious power of the Orca to those that are still considering getting one for this specific art.

I tried to bait this specific Abaddon a little earlier, though I was ignored. Quite a while later however, he returned in local and I had him on scan again, except this time he was not alone. He was accompanied by a Megathron. I landed in the mission to find the Megathron on the first gate (Guarding their wrecks?) and the Abaddon on Dscan towards the Acceleration Gate. I also immediately notice the Megathron starting to approach me. It was here that I know it was game on!

I proceeded to steal, and without hesitation saw the Mega launch drones, yellow box and then red box. I was now also pointed and webbed, but as we were at the first gate, logistics had no trouble coming in to save the day. Moments later the Abbadon pilot landed too. He stayed a while and decided to bail. I didn’t think I’d see him again until he returned in a Armageddon. Nice! I have swapped to the Sleipner in the meantime. The Armageddon also yellow boxed and launched drones. A few seconds later I realize he just placed armor maintenance bots on the Megathron and is now a legit target! Haha. “Here, let me help you”

I wanted to kill both, so from my Orca  I organize for another point, drop some tank and fit it.

During all of this I still had a convo going with “rumple bear”, the Megathron pilot.

I guess helping your friend can get you killed too 😛 Oh and claiming you’re a chick doesn’t really change things…

Thats it for now. In the meantime, watch your local for the non mining fleet orca gang 😀

fly dangerously 😀

Somehow there has to be a way to get some dramatic music in on the title of a blog post.

EVE life is quiet. Too quiet. In fact, its so quiet… haha wait nvm. You get the idea. I am pretty excited about coming Tuesday. In fact, it seems like all of EVE is. And yes, that is a GOOD thing!

Everywhere in chat channels people are talking about which feature excites them the most. This is pretty contrary to the Incarna expansions that went, well, unnoticed? Instead of trying out the new feature we had channels filled with “How do I turn this crap off?” CCP obviously saw that and realized they HAD to do something about it. So much unhappiness and complaints, people leaving, cmon.

The most prominent feature that has me excited is the new Nebulae. Ever since they mentioned them at the fanfest I couldn’t wait for it. I remember when I started playing EVE how the visuals amazed me. Personally the nebulae is what gives EVE the personality and feel that it has.

That, together with new Tier3 Battlecruisers, some minor improved graphics (shadows), engine trails, corporation wide bookmars, the Hybrid weapon buff, Per ship orbit (FINALLY!), 100 saved fittings instead of 50, implants on killmails and new cyno effects really has to get someone out there excited! Unfortunately due to CCP history, the downtime on patchday might be longer than expected and it usually is. So queue a long skill!

After our parting with Burn Away we found ourselves exploring wormhole life again. With some allies, we quickly got settled. They proved to be the Gods of sleepers. Seriously. Class5 sites with no voice comms are pretty much afk-able (if there was such a word). Yes this depends on 1 or 2 peeps in dedicated roles, but its a lot less work that imagined. The experience they have with the sleeper class sites are unmatched form what I’ve seen. But, this comes at a cost…

Bearing that in mind I’m sure everyone has heard the rumors of how much isk can be made in wormholes. Well, incursions came and broke that. Totally. See, there are two options here:

Wormholes:

  1. Scan. Scan.
  2. Gather a large amount of friends and move into a wormhole.
  3. Scan. Scan. Scan.
  4. Set up a POS.
  5. Scan. Scan.
  6. Notice someone is using your wormhole as a route to high sec.
  7. Freak out and hide in POS.
  8. Scan. Scan.
  9. Discover a new signature in your wormhole.
  10. Scan
  11. Once you eventually have enough peeps online.
  12. Scan. Decide to attempt some sleeper operations.
  13. Scan. Wait for more people to get online.
  14. Scan.
  15. Shoot at sleepers.
  16. Clean up the site.
  17. Wait for a way out to sell the loot unless someone wants to buy it all
  18. Eventually get paid
  19. Rinse and repeat.
  20. Scan
Incursions
  1. Fit a ship.
  2. Fly to incursion system in high sec.
  3. Ask for fleet.
  4. Join fleet audio.
  5. Listen.
  6. Profit.
  7. Rinse and Repeat

The salvaging and waiting to be paid is also another thing that might raise some trust issues. This vs the incursion insta payment method is hard to compare. How do I know all this? Well, I have an alt that went on and tried out some incursions. Admittedly I was pleasantly surprised at first. Playing mostly a logistics role I can comfortably say that Incursions are the closest to PVP type logistics you can get in a ‘safe’ PVE environment.

The worst part of the wormhole section in my opinion is the extreme wait. No local. No gate to warp to to go see if theres something for shooty. Getting used to fitting a probe launcher to find something for shooty in a neighboring wormhole when solo is tough too. If you log in and there is no one online, well you tend to go see whats up on your alts and end up in incursions. lol.

Conclusion.

From an ISK grinding perspective, Wormholes need a lot of active, self sufficient, eager yet patient people to make it a success. Its a miners heaven, a manufacturer too. Incursions on the other hand needs someone to fit a ship properly and listen to an FC. Hardly any patience required as there is always one happening somewhere.

All this waiting has gotten me to a grinding halt again. I’ve had less engagements the past month than I’ve had in a week previously. Sadness yes, but not to worry. It will change. My tear bucket is empty, but I smell a rainy season on its way. Its time to test out my new raincoat!

CCP Live Event

And in other news. Most capsuleers have heard of the recent live event that CCP had. The fleet leaving Polaris? Yes? No? Well, “I was there”. We’ve been actively recruiting, and one of the new corpies got me organized into joining a random fleet that was forming in New Caldari. I quickly scrammed to Jita to buy and fit out a new cane and haul ass to where the fleet was. Upon my joining we were at toughly 70 peeps in fleet. Once we eventually got mobilized we were sitting at 160 strong. Considering almost half of the fleet were from NPC corporations, I would make the assumption that very few have the experience of flying in such a large fleet, if any. Nonetheless the fleet comms were pretty manageable.

We watched the polaris fleet from the livestream link that was being spammed everywhere and quickly made way for the Tama Solar System to meet up with them. CCP did not hesitate to jump into our fleet that was waiting on the gate. The FC started calling primaries and all hell broke loose! I quickly had to ALT+SHIFT+Z as the lag was starting to become pretty bad. Once all the brackets were off its was pretty manageable

I managed to get on roughly 11 killmails before I died. Boy did I enjoy that! To make matters even more interesting, it seemed like all the CCP ships had 2 plex and one or two Nex’ items in their cargo holds. I know of a few peeps that managed to snatch a plex or two and bail with a fat grin on their faces : )

I left after I died, but from the news I’ve read, not long after my departure did some nullsec alliances show up with their I-Win (Caps, sub-caps, titans) buttons and some finish off what we started. Well done CCP. This really will be one of my more memorable experiences in the game 😉

Things seems to be stirring here in WCS. Watch this space! In the meantime, be careful. We might be watching you, waiting till that last sleeper pops … : )
